The saying goes that you’re a jack of all trades and a master of none. This used to be somewhat of an insult insinuating that you were scatter brained in your endeavors and were incapable of mastering one particular craft. In today’s world, especially the media world, being a jack of all trades is a valued attribute.

Being a jack of all trades doesn’t mean that you are doing a million things at once. It means that you make sure that you are knowledgeable about and capable of doing the basics of any new innovations within your professional field of choice. For example, journalists today have to know how to write for print, online and blogging style. They must be knowledgeable about how to handle social media and social media marketing, have experience working with various content management tool systems, dabble in web producing…I mean the list can go on and on. To master any one of these things can take time, but understanding the foundations of each is what makes you attractive to an employer and enhances your skill set.

Many colleges offer continuing education courses for working professionals who want to make sure they are up to date with everything in their industry. Again, if you are a writer it won’t hurt to take a class in PR writing, grant writing or even web design. You can definitely choose one skill out of all the ones you know that you want to perfect, but having your hand in a little bit of everything will only benefit you in the long run. The expression “go hard or go home” is especially crucial today with our economy and the constant competition that you will have to face with every new project you embark on. Being a jack of all trades is one of the best things that you can be. In short, you should NEVER stop learning.
