Mattel has announced that they will be manufacturing a bald doll for children who have suffered loss of hair from cancer or other illnesses. “These dolls, which will be a friend of Barbie, will be distributed exclusively to children’s hospitals and other hospitals treating children with cancer throughout the U.S. and Canada, directly reaching girls who are most affected by hair loss,” said Mattel’s spokesman Alan Hilowitz. Earlier this year, the push for a hairless Barbie doll was brought to the forefront via Facebook, when a page campaigned for the addition to Mattel’s current doll offering. Since it’s launch, the FB page has gained over 155,000 “likes”.

As is the case with Barbie and all of her friends, the new dolls will come with loads of girly accessories, including “hats, scarves and other fashion accessories to provide girls with a traditional fashion play experience.” For those who choose, there will even be wigs and hair pieces that can be interchanged or completely removed. Beckie Sypin, co-founder of the Facebook movement, told ABC News “We hope it gets the message out that being bald is beautiful and is no big deal. There’s no need to cover up.”

In a smart move on the company’s part, Mattel will not make these dolls available for profit in retail stores. By distributing them exclusively through hospitals, Mattel hopes to “get these into the hands of children who can most benefit from a play experience with these dolls.” A portion of the dolls will also be donated to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.
