If you sometimes feel like clothing designers just don’t have a clue when it comes to the fit of some of their fashions, Victoria Beckham’s approach to design might give you some insight.

In a 10-page photo spread in the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK, the wife and mother shared her process for making sure her clothes are right for real women.

“We always joke that we have this fabulously gorgeous 17-year-old model who is six-foot-whatever and then I say ‘OK, I’m going to put it on. I stand for the general public here.’ It’s how I work,” the 37-year-old told the mag.

The mother of four went on to say that she was disappointed when her growing belly got in the way of being hands-on with her work while she was pregnant with daughter Harper Seven last year.

“I found it really difficult when I was pregnant and I couldn’t do that. It’s part of the process – I’ll stand here in my knickers and start draping fabric over myself, It was very hard when I didn’t have my body.”

While I applaud Victoria’s effort, she no more represents the general public than then 17-year-old, six-foot-whatever model she passes on. According to the Daily Mail, the average British woman wears a UK size 16 (US size 14) and Victoria, who’s strikingly thin figure is constantly being reported, wears a UK size 6 (US size 4). In the United States, the average woman wears between an 11 and a 14. Sorry Vicky, you are far from “regular”—and that’s after four pregnancies!

Considering the prices of Victoria’s high-end fashion line it probably doesn’t even matter if the average-sized woman can fit her designs or not, but if she really wants to get in touch with the general public she might want to stop using her body as the prototype.

You should also consider that the average woman isn’t her target market. The average woman isn’t looking to high fashion for clothes. Even with her “cost-friendly” line, dresses still start at $500. The average woman isn’t buying a $500 dress. I think her target market probably does look more like her than the average woman. Her perspective may be a little off, but I think in reading this article, we should keep in mind that she isn’t hoping to complete with Lane Bryant or even the Limited.

really?!? that woman looks CREEPY! and how the hell is the “average” woman an 11-14? and size 12 in america? that’s big as hell. what are they talking about? it seems to me that most women i see on a daily basis barely have their thighs rubbing together which= skinny to me.

I’m one of those “average” women that is a size 10-11 (US). Most people I know are size a size 8 or bigger. Yes 8 is considered fat here as well. The skinnest I’ve been was a size 5 my freshman year. But even then, my thighs “rubbed” together although I was skinny as a rail.
