6. Elastic bands.

Ouch- less bands without metal pieces are essential for buns and ponytails.

7. Hair Clips.

Use to section your hair and to hold your hair in place.

8. Rollers.

Whether its foam rollers, flex rods, or color foam formers, you will be able to achieve a natural curly style.

9. Flat Iron.

If you want to try using heat, the flat iron is the best bet to get straighten hair.

10. Your Hands.

The best tool of all is your hands. Okay, your fingers, too. Massaging your scalp and putting oil in your tresses involve those pretty hands of yours.

Awesome list!! Hair clips for sectioning the hair are essential for me!

Whoa… I strongly disagree with using combs on natural hair. You should always detangle your hair with your fingers, with conditioner/moisturizer, while it’s wet.

So are you entirely comb free? I used to be comb free for like 3 months, but then my hair started to feel packed together at the roots, and I went back to combing it in moderation. I’m just not into fingers only styling. There are some things that my fingers just can’t do. When you have clumsy fingers like me, a very wide-toothed comb is sometimes necessary. Ideally, I’d like to be completely comb free, but I don’t know how to do it with success.

Hi Cha Cha! I am completely comb-free, unless I straightened my hair. I’m pretty tender-headed, so the only way I can gently detangle my hair without crying is with my fingers while it’s wet. If it’s not wet, I don’t even try.

From everything I’d heard, I always thought that combs were detrimental for curly hair. But I guess if you can use them without hurting your hair or breaking into tears, more power to you. I’m sticking with the fingers though.

I think the list is awesome! Some people use combs as well as their hands to detangle their hair while wet. I know sometimes I need a comb to get some knots out of my hair.

I’d add that bone combs are more gentle to the hair than plastic ones.

Also a brush such as a modified denman or tangle teaser can be helpful.

The list was good until I got to #9 Flat Iron. It’s totally unnecessary for anyone embracing their natural texture. It’s a great option to have as a natural but it’s far from essential–I say this as a 4b BSL who has never used a flat iron. Instead, I’d recommend that a brush be added to this list: a boar bristle brush, paddle brush, denman or tangle teezer. I’m sure that most naturalistas use a brush more than a flat iron any day.
