Occupy Wall Street Artist Makes Jay-Z "Scrooge" Statue: Are They Taking It Too Far? - Coco & Creme

Ever since Jay-Z released a line of “Occupy All Streets” T-Shirts under his Rocawear clothing label, he’s been placed under constant scrutiny by the media as well as protestors. Critics were particularly angry that none of the proceeds from the shirts will be going towards the movement.

In light of the fact that Rocawear is continuing to sell the t-shirts despite backlash, Daniel Edward, a sculptor, fired back through art. Last week, Daniel unveiled his Occupy Wall Street Project “Mogul (Jay Z Occupies Occupy Wall Street)” which features Jay-Z at the head of a totem pole along with Scrooge McDuck from Disney’s Ducktales, Mr. Burns from The Simpsons and Richie Rich.

Here’s what Daniel had to say about the sculpture:

“I think Jay-Z has made himself a face of [the] Wall Street that Occupiers are protesting against. Maybe Jay-Z is striving to be in the one percent? Which is why I chose the composition of a totem pole because I thought it would resemble the number one. Rap stars who turn ‘Scrooge’ have to suffer some damage to their street credibility.”

Does Jay-Z have an obligation to donate the proceeds he receives from the shirts towards the movement? Will his “Occupy All Streets” T-shirts really affect his street credibility considering that the shirts sold out online the same week they were released? What do you think, Clutchettes?
