One of C+C’s favorite artists, Janelle Monae, is featured in Glamour Magazine’s August 2011 issue. The spread shows Monae against colorful background full of imagination and verve wearing her trademark white and black menswear looks.

The article gives further insight on why Monae chooses to stick to a white and black color palette and menswear looks. She tells Glamour:

“I’m just attracted to a very tailored, classic look that commands attention. The tuxedo, especially on women, does that, I think, because of the stark black and white. It’s not a trendy thing. It’s timeless. It’s transcendent. The kind of thing you can give to your grandchildren.”

She also shares that her classic look developed as she matured:

“When I was a kid, I think I was more fearless. Children go with whatever makes them feel good—like if that’s the color green or orange, they do that with their clothes. As I’ve grown older, everything reversed. My music, my personality—onstage those things became my colors.”

Though I still wear every color in the crayon box, I’m rarely caught in anything other than a skirt or a dress. As I got older, I became drawn to classic and feminine silhouettes and I rarely deviate from that.

I learned what worked for my frame, taste and comfort level, and that’s what I stick to. I’ve seen the same pattern in older women. Though not as extreme as Janelle Monae’s, many women have a signature look that encapsulates their style.

Do you have a signature look? What do you think about Janelle Monae’s style?

Janelle Monae has been one of my favorite artist for a while now. I appreciated the androgynous look for its uniqueness and simplicity, but this tux wear has become too predictable. I think most fans understand her brand, but I’d like to see some slight variety. How many interesting fashion spreads can one do wearing a black and white tux in all of them?
