A great musician is nothing without his or her own personal sense of style. When an artist makes it big, the image must follow, which usually means a high-fashion designer behind the scenes. W Magazine is celebrating the partnership between fashion and music in its “Behind The Muses” feature.

In the feature, some of the world’s most popular artists are shown alongside the designers inspired by them: Kanye West with the sisters of Rodarte, Esperanza Spalding with Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein, M.I.A. with Donatella Versace and Janelle Monae with Karl Lagerfeld. Young musicians of color are indeed taking the world by storm and are forces to be reckoned with in their field as well as in the field of fashion. Janelle Monae wore Chanel to the 2011 Met Gala, so let’s see if this fashion spread sparks any other collaborations.
