A new study, the Beloit College Mindset List shows that a new generation of technological driven youth entering college this fall have no need to wear the old timepiece.

The study says, “With cell phones to tell them the time, there is no need for a wrist watch.”

We can’t help to think of Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City” Season 2. When asked by her new beau Big why she doesn’t wear a watch, a sassy Bradshaw said, “There’s always someone to tell me the time.”

In “Clueless” a frantic Cher explained to her father why she lost track of time and was making her way back home after hours. Cher’s answer: “A watch doesn’t really go with this outfit daddy.” She was wearing Alaia.

Remember when watches were the go-to for luxurious wrist-wear? We could stack our new gold watches against a slew of clicking bangles and kill it! Has those days officially passed?

Are young women of America more inclined to check the time on our blinged out smart phones, rather than a Michael Kors rose gold watch? Sound off!

I was thinking about this not to long ago, but I do have a preference for watches. Its much easier to just look at my while I’m in class or running for the bus instead of digging for my phone. (I missed the bus a few times doing that)

I also just like the classic look of some watches, so I’ve amassed a collection of my favorites. Call me old fashion *kanye shrug* Besides I can’t tell you the amount of time that I’ve forgotten my phone anyway, so I tend to rely on my watches.

I used to be one of those girls who relied on a cell phone, demurring that “time is only an illusion” or something silly like that. But then I started hankering for something pretty to wear on my wrist, every day, and got a sleek DKNY chain link time-piece. I LOVE it, I don’t know how I did without. It makes me feel classic and all about my business (I got places to be!) In fact, I think it’s actually made me more punctual. I’m turning 30 this year, and my watch doesn’t make me feel like 30 is the new 20, it lets me know that 30 is 30, too old to be rummaging for my phone to tell me the time.

  3. I kinda do think that watches aren’t really necessary in the age of cell phones, but I wear them for fashion. It serves less of a purpose as a time-telling tool and more as a statement piece to promote my personal style.

Oh and Michael Kors has some hot watches! I have a gold one that I’m in love with.

I love watches & I have plenty. Wear them all the time. Also, when quoting be sure of the quote. Clueless is a cult classic! Cher said, “A watch doesn’t really go with this outfit, Daddy.” Love the site!

Yeah I have totally forgone the watch in lieu of technology that is always at hand, whether it be cellphone, ipad, macbook, or someone else’s watch. However that pink Kors beauty might make a sister a believer.

  6. I don’t think I’ve worn a watch in the ’00s. The only watches I’ve seen people wear (and the kind I’m considering purchasing) are the ones used for training. They show things like how far and fast you’ve run/swim/rode your bike, etc.

I just got a new watch for my birthday, before then I hadn’t worn a watch since high school. It’s definitely a statement piece so I wear it to pull a look together without having to do much thinking most of the time.

I think the use of cell phones has delayed my buying a watch. But it is so handy, especially when your place of work does not involve a computer and you can get fired for checking your cell phone. (For instance, I work at a store in the mall) I wear a watch instead. Besides, jewelry watches are gorgeous. And who doesn’t love Fossil?

  9. binky says:

Not to me, I love watches (thanks to my dad who has tons!!!) because even though I have and like my cell, I don’t have it in hand often but in my purse so it is easy for me to look at my wrist instead of digging. Besides, looking at a watch is more classic and elegant to me (especially if you are bored and looking at your watch on the sly) instead of having your phone in your hand constantly. But I do agree to an certain extent that watches are outdated to most people and became simply another accessory not really something you need to wear to tell the time. But that watch above is nice!

Wow, no thanks for the correction? Why was my comment removed? I read your site everyday & love the articles. I feel slighted that my comment was removed & it was not derogatory in any way. Make me feel some kind of way.

I still love watches. I think it’s silly and impractical to have a phone in my hand all the time anyway.

I am such a watch fan. I feel naked if I leave home without one. I am surprised some people don’t wear them. I am a big fan of Michael Kors big face watches and for work, I go with Anne Klein.

  14. Christen says:

I love watches especially Michael Kors. That one above is gorgeous. I feel like watches are still very practical because I’m not going to have a phone on me at all times (at work mainly). I think they are a great fashion accessory.

I have not worn a watch in years! I think they can be a great looking accesory with the right outfit. the problem with wathes is that I always loose them then again I always loose my phone too!
LOVE The one pictured above… can you do a give away?

A good watch with a compass is what any thinking American would wear. What is old are the electrical grids from which everyone depends on to fuel their cell phones and computers. When that goes down…everything, except a watch, goes with it.
